Needing something to do this year I decided to have a go at the Everest Marathon. I had never ran a marathon before so what better than to have a go at the highest marathon in the world with a start line at Everest Basecamp at 5350m above sea level and a finish line at 3500m.
My training was terrible as constant tight calf muscles prevented me from running over 5km. Not one to walk away from a challenge I decided to walk in from Jiri on the old trekking route to Lukla to stretch my calfs out.
I finish quite well with a time of 6hrs 30mins and the 4th place foreigner.
After the marathon I was planning to run the Annapurna circuit but I ran into severe difficulties on day one with a nasty case of heat stroke that left me hyperventilating half dead by the side of the road. The next day I decided to walk back but the same thing happened again. It took me another 3 years of searching before I found out the cause of this.
Dejected I moved onwards to Leh and northern India. There I learned how to ride a motorbikeand also climbed my first 6000m mountain, Stok Kangri at 6123m and allin a three day turnaround from Leh.
